Christine Candolins way of working is hard to define precisely in words, since the content, or idea, of a work can best be sensed as though beneath and behind it. The theme or thesis has frequently been a kind of a longing for a state of mental repose, and a wish to learn to be at peace, to be there. Candolin seeks to immaterialise the materials in her works, so that the specific, everyday character of the material vanishes, and is realised only as the elements that bring out the idea of the work. For example, water dripping into stone basins turns the space into an audio-visual abode of silence, while the transparent and reflective properties of the glass or water, seem to transform human thought into a phenomenon that is visible as motion or energy. The dense steel mesh traps the reflected light, making it strangely present. In her latest approach to her work she again incorporates hand-written text into her visual expression, while also using slide and video projections on the walls and on the floors. She has also incorporated contemporary physics into her visual thinking and into her philosophical approach maintaining yet the poetic aspect in her art.
