The performance consists of abstract movement and tumbling; live percussive music played on West African and Afro-Cuban instruments; live vocal music; poetry; prose; painting; and creative use of ordinary materials. It was created and directed by Nicole Garneau and is performed by Big Smith Performance Ensemble. Big Smith means big drums and big sound. |

| An all-female percussion ensemble, Big Smith is rooted in a deep love of women s drumming and feminist political activism. The group performs both original and traditional drum compositions that mix African, Afro-Cuban, Latin, and Native American hand drumming and mallet drumming traditions with Big Smith s own energy and rhythms.Big Smith is currently presenting concerts of original and traditional drum compositions and performances of Bloodrut, an interdisciplinary performance created and directed by Big Smith member Nicole Garneau. Nicole Garneau s performance work currently consists of site-specific, movement-based solo and collaborative performance art that often addresses a political issue. She also makes installations that often include performance; collages; handmade books; and graphic art. Nicole is interested in the intersections between deeply personal concerns and the work that activists do in the world. She feels her task is to place the exploration of pain and joy in a political context by finding images outside her own personal experience, thereby making the subjects more broadly relevant. At the same time, she works to examine her personal connections to larger political questions. In this way, she provides audiences with ways to connect emotionally to complex political issues. Bloodrut is an investigation and exploration of the ancient history of timekeeping and the different kinds of cycles experienced in contemporary American culture. Through honest language and rich images, Big Smith hopes the performance opens up lively conversations and dialogue on many subjects. | ||
